Can't finish normal setup on Linux

Hi, I'm trying to install Exponential 3.2-3 on my machine running Mandrake 9.1 (PHP 4.3.1, Apache 2.0, mysql 4.0.11). In php.ini, I've disabled safe_mode, raised max_execution_time to 500, and in httpd.conf I slightly raised timeouts values, but I can't get to the end of the setup process. Everything runs just fine until I get to the "Site registration" screen. I then de-select the checkbox and press ok. Then after a few seconds I get the "Connection reset by peer" message, that would appear every time I try to open the site unless I delete site.ini.append.php
Anybody can help?

P.S. That linux box is a vmware virtual machine, so yeah, sure it's kinda slower than a real box, but everything works just fine, phpnuke, postnuke and stuff like that work fine, and it has 384MB ram reserved, I think it's enough =)
