It was solved today by a contractor who is working for us.
If I remove the "key-words" tag from all the classes, frontpage, folder, article, documentation etc my editing time in the front-end admin goes from 30 seconds down to about 3 seconds.

Can anyone explain to me why the slow editing was only an issue in the "front-end" gui, and not the "back-end" gui?

Different viewcache.ini, search indexing, different extensions w/ edit handlers or workflow settings maybe?

site.ini PreViewCache enabled on just one of them for instance?
