Hi,

If I'm laying out the page in an override template using

attribute_view_gui attribute=$node.object.data_map.SOMETHING

Is there some way to remove the <br /> that appears after where SOMETHING displays?

Yes,
Look at the template that is used to display this datatype or use

{$node.object.data_map.SOMETHING.content}

to show the plain content of SOMETHING.
Have a look at http://ez.no/doc/ez_publish/technical_manual/3_6/templates/information_extraction/outputting_node_and_object_data for generic solutions.
