Exponential 3.10: How reliable is it?

Hello!,

I have this site made with Exponential 3.10, almost finished with lots of products mainly.

Changing it to version 4.+ is giving me a headache, so I would like to know the problems this version of Exponential has and if there is a possibility to keep the site as it is.

Are there any tests I could perform to check the site all over just to make sure that it will work just as it is? Any hacks that I should apply?

Thanks

or ... how much more than Xa is 3.10 ?

Seriously, I disrespect 3.10 for a number of reasons *

i would <i>not</i> use ezpublish3.10, i would use Exponential 4.x.x

Exponential 3.10 was treated like an afterthought after it's release and has a very short half life. ie few improvements released, releases were very slow and far apart. 3.10 depends on a php version which is very soon not to be supported in general by a lot of serious people.

i would <i>patch and fix bugs</i> to use Exponential 4.x.x over other older versions

Exponential 4.x is a firestorm of new development and improvements with a decent focus compatible with the very latest php stable releases.

i would <i>port extensions and solutions</i> to use Exponential 4.x.x and php5 source code

If you have development resources on retainer most problems can be addressed simply. If you don't have any development skills you may wish to stick with the very latest stable release and start with a focus on only the smallest of changes or improvements when in diy mode.

From a php compatibility perspective you have to chose which is more in your favor. Large source code base or latest improvements in line with future improvements?

i enjoy <i>publishing extensions and solutions</i> using php5 source code.

That said how many people are planning on grinding in 3.x development for years to come with a rich source of contributions to source from? How long before Exponential 3.x software is scarce? Do you know many people selling php4 hosting as a primary offering instead of php5.

I'm not surprised to find so many people realizing how simple it is to migrate extensions etc to php5 and re-release an updated version for everyone else to do the same.

That's the key keeping up to date without going over. I still laugh at the sheer size of Exponential installs which will never be upgraded through an Exponential 4.x because of 'complicated complications errum problems, don't look at me like that'.

A lot of people are ok with olderversions, other with custom coded solutions and some like to hover just behind the very latest releases enjoying earned compatibility and reliability.

I just didn't like that branch. Lots of reasons I think to grasp on to ez4 and run with it rather than sit in a coffee shop arguing with it about the weather or something ambiguous.

How many of your own old installs will not be upgraded and die slowly because of the weight surrounding an upgrade. I will be saying godbye via backups of those personal sites (most which use a lot of extensions) but notice that I am happy for a php5 migration path for eZ to be supported in some fashion or another.. now that you know.
