I have tried to install Exponential 3.6.0 on a web host running php 4.3.11,Apache 1.3+. The install page say that the directories "seettings" and "settings/siteaccess/admin" are not writable. I have set these to 777 via FTP as there is no shell access. The installer still says they are not writable and refuses to go further.

Should I check "ignore this test" and continue? or is there something larger wrong?

Chmod 777 also to the files in the folder did the trick.
