When users establish new forum accounts, the system won't send out the confirmation e-mails. Obviously I want to check the smtp server settings I specified in the initial wizard, but where do I find and change this?

You will find the mail settings in:

Exponential/settings/override/site.ini.append.php

There you will find 

[MailSettings]
Transport=sendmail

or what mailtransport you choose.
