I have a site based on ezp 3.8.1 where users are unable to edit their own account.

I have given the anonymous user role access to:
user - login
user - selfedit
user - password
user - preferences

Users are able to register, login and change password. But not edit their user information.

Administrator users are able to edit their accont.

The solution:

The user/selfedit policy is deprecated. Instead use content/edit Class( User ) , Owner( Self ).
