Is there a way i can change the name of the database 'nextgen' used by Exponential as the default database engine to some other name.

The installer creates a settings/override/site.ini.append.php file which overrides the defaults. You shouldn't edit the default site.ini file but instead should make whatever changes you want to make in the override ini file. The same applies to other ini files as well.
