Running v3.4 stable on linux.

When I create a new image object through the browser admin doing the upload and then press 'Send For Publishing', I can browse my linux directories and find the image but I do not see the thumb and the large, medium and reference renditions of the image.

If I click 'Save Draft' before clicking 'Send for Publishing', the extra renditions do get created.

Is this by design? If so, for what purpose?
